Second Life Help

Okay folks, I have questions. I'm starting a Master's program in January, and I need to create a profile on Second Life as part of my studies. (How freaking cool is that, by the way?)

The problem? I have never used this in my life. I have heard about it, but actually created an account tonight and was lucky I managed to get my poor avatar fully clothed. HELP! I'd like to have some working knowledge of this once I start classes in January!
